Welcome,
I’m Kathleen.
I’m a licensed psychotherapist in both Texas & New York. I have been practicing psychotherapy since 2014, in Chicago, Southern California, New York, and now Texas, where I currently live.
My Approach to Therapy
I’m here to help you better understand yourself and the context of your life. I see therapy as an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and get deeply curious about what you are feeling and why. This process will help you let go of what’s been holding you back or weighing you down and begin to integrate new perspectives and ways of being in the world - leading to a more authentic and expansive life. I am an experiential therapist, and I’ll be intentional about co-creating a space comfortable enough for you to really experience the feelings we talk about. At times, we will also tune in to bodily sensations and work to regulate the self from a bottom-up perspective. My approach is warm, compassionate, thoughtfully direct, and I use humor when it makes sense. I trust the value and effectiveness of this work, and I’ll check in to make sure we’re feeling movement and progress along the way.
My Professional Background
I have worked for over 12 years as a psychotherapist in a wide variety of clinical settings - non-profits, community clinics, university counseling centers, & group practice - in Chicago, Southern California, New York, and now Texas. I have experience working with individuals, couples, groups, mind/body workshops, and retreats. At this time, I am only working with individuals, but I will update my Services here as needed. I continue to engage in trainings and training groups that emphasize depth-oriented, experiential, and somatic approaches to therapy. And I maintain state licensure in both Texas and New York.
I really enjoy being a therapist, and consider it an honor to witness the transformation I see in my clients. I believe in 'doing the work,’ and not just for others. My own journey with therapy has shaped my personal and professional identity, allowing me to sit with a firsthand understanding of the courage this takes and deep empathy for the process. Prior to this career, I worked for over a decade in community organizing and public policy, focusing on urban housing and immigration. I also have experience as a challenge course instructor, facilitating adventure-based learning experiences on high and low ropes courses. I am a certified yoga instructor and bring breath and body techniques to session when relevant. I have experience teaching yoga at several of my psychotherapy sites over the years and am considering teaching a class again in the Austin area.
Outside of Work
I come alive outdoors, moving my body, and with laughter. I live in Central Texas, so this often happens on waterways, trails, state parks, at the gym, and with the company of dear friends and family - including my husband and two daughters. I love trying new board games and art projects, and experimenting with dinner recipes, modifying them to make them my own. Recently, I’ve been playing with backflips at a local parkour gym with my girls, meeting friends of all ages.
